4 Steps to Correctly Washing Your Face

Start a daily routine to washing and maintaining beautiful skin.

Who ever knew that washing your face was not as simple as applying water  and calling it a day.  Some would say “it’s an art to it”.  Luckily for the us all it’s not difficult at all.  Once you know what your skin type is, you can then cleanse and moisturize properly.  Here’s 4 simple steps I use in both the morning time and before getting into bed.  Did you know your skin rejuvenates naturally when you sleep?   Do you notice when you do your facial cleansing routine at night night that your face always looks healthier in the mornings perfect for “I woke up like this” moments?

Step 1.  Know Your Skin Type

Before you can even begin start a daily routine to maintaining beautiful skin you first must know what kind of skin you have. Then you’ll know how to take care of it.

Oily skin is shiny, greasy, and may have big pores.

Dry skin is flaky, scaly, or rough.

Combination skin is dry in some spots (cheeks) and oily in others (forehead, nose, and chin).

Sensitive skin may sting, burn, or itch after you use some makeup or other products.

Normal skin is balanced, clear, and not sensitive.

Step 2. Cleansing

Cleaning Normal/Combo Skin

Let me start by crushing the thought that you have to buy expensive products to see results.  Your standard drug store products can get the job done, so take a moment to breathe and put away your wallet.

Finding a nearby soap in the in the shower or at the sink to wash your face is not the fix you need—if you even use soap at all.  Finding the skin care routine that works for you may take a little time just as finding the right hair products, but be patient!

No Makeup

1.  Apply warm water either directly on your face or with a warm face towel.

2.  Start by applying a gentle cleanser or face bar soap with your fingertips, don’t scrub.  A dime size should be suffice.

3.  Rinse with plenty of warm water, then pat dry.

Cleaning Dry Skin

1.  To keep moisture,, use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t have alcohol or fragrances.

2.  Gently wash your skin, then rinse with plenty of warm water. **Don’t use hot water

3.  Exfoliate once a week to get rid of flaky skin cells for a clearer and more even skin tone.

Cleaning Oily Skin

1.  Use an oil-free foaming cleanser to wash your face.

2.  Rinse with plenty of warm water.

3.  To control the shine and keep your skin clear I recommend using a toner or astringent after that does not irritate your skin.

Cleaning Sensitive Skin

1.  Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and rinse with warm water.

2.  Refrain from rubbing your skin with a towel — gently pat it dry.

3.  Look for products that contain calming ingredients on the label like aloe, chamomile, green tea polyphenols, and oats.

Step 3: Moisturize

Two myths that are far beyond the truth are “I don’t need moisture because I already have oily skin”, and “Moisturizers are only for older people.” If you have either one of these reasons embodied in your thoughts, you need to dismiss them now!  I use to think that I did not need to moisture my skin because it would only result to oiler throughout the day.

All skin type’s needs moisture every day.  To help seal in the moisture, apply it while your skin is still damp from washing or rinsing.  Finding a moisturizer that is lightweight and oil-free if you have acne or your skin is oily is key, so it won’t block your pores.

Step 4: Put on Sunscreen

It’s a good idea to use a separate protection for your skin, although your moisturizer may already have sunscreen in it.  I only apply this step if I am not applying makeup.  If you enjoy being made up on the daily, buy makeup that has sunscreen protection.  Wear it every time, regardless if it’s not sunny and/or cold whether outside.

I only apply this step if I am not applying makeup.

It only takes 15 minutes for the sun to damage your skin.  Look for a sunscreen that gives broad-spectrum protection with an SPF of at least 30.  I don’t do so well with the reapply every 2 hours – 4 hours as it mentions on the label, but I recommend attempting to do your best to remember.

Because I classify as having oily skin, I try to remember to have kleenex or some sort of  towel paper handy so I can dab away any oil that has accumulated throughout the day. .

Awesome post! I have neglected my face washing routine over the past few months. I have recently picked it back up and I’m noticing that my skin looks FLAWLESS when I wake up in the morning. A few years ago, I purchased a clarisonic from Nordstrom during their half yearly sale and it works wonders. I use African Black Soap on my skin and it works wonders.

Girl I too purchased a Clarisonic a few years back, but not from Nordstrom, and not on sale. I have not used it in so so so long. I plan to whip that baby out and try it again. I used Black soap once before and I agree it does do wonders for your skin. I love it when my skin feels and look healthy–such a boost in my daily confidence.
